2019 World Happiness Report
I traveled to Denmark earlier this year, and I was totally shocked by how significantly different the nation is. They are constantly top-3 happiest nation around the globe, and I could really feel the easiness and satisfaction of their life style vs. mine when walking on the street and observing people doing their work. People casually picnicked under cherry blossom trees with joy and peacefulness, while exactly no one rushed to anywhere on the street even on a Monday morning. I felt total happiness throughout my entire trip there.
I read a book “Hygge” about how Dane create happy elements in their lives, like light, candles, comfy spots at home, handmade food, etc. I got interested in seeing how happy each nation is.
From 2019 Happiness report, I used d3 to visualize the ranking result- the larger & redder the dot, the happier the nation according to the happiness research. The actual number, although fun to compare, isn’t quite important.
However, through this visualization categorized by regions, it’s apparent that most happiest countries are in Europe and Americas. Least happiest are in Africa. Asia is a bittersweet mixture. It’s also easy to identify those unique countries in each region- like Ukraine is the smallest green dot in Europe, and Mauritius is the large pink dot in Africa.
Among all 156 ranked countries, Taiwan is 25th, which seems pretty good. The only two larger circles in Asia than Taiwan is Israel (13th) and United Arab Emirates (21st).
